You get to get away from the rents, spend time outdoors, sleep in cabins, meet other kids, cause a little trouble, maybe even a little summer camp girl or boyfriend? But nothing is like summer camp at Mt. Hood Oregon. A place where yu can ride all day, skateboard all evening, eat Cobra Dogs, Volcano Cones, and Unicorn Food. A place where you can hang out with your heroes and progress your snowboarding. Session 3 at High Cascade was this and more and Gretchen was able to take a break from commenting on the Summer Olympic trials for her Signature Session. Over the week she held mini shred clinics for the campers, Challenged them to a soccer match, and kicked off the first ever Gretchen Bleiler Seekand Shred Scavenger hunt presented by us. The Goal… everything from learn 3 new tricks to capture a photo of Gretchen in the lift line. The Grand Prize…an all expense trip back to High Cascade next summer. In the end Nick Potenza won by finding almost every single item on the list, Second place was a tie between Kai Wiggins and his friend Anon wo collaborated their efforts against the rest of the camp for a free k2 set up and board respectively, and Miss Lindsay Kralovec took 3rd place for and a brand new 08/09 K2 board as well. Bleiler prevailed as the fan's choice over tough competition including snowboarder Lindsay Jacobellis, Motocross athlete Jessica Patterson, and surfer Stephanie Gilmore. This was Bleiler's second ESPY nomination and first ESPY win. "The espy is one of the biggest awards in sports and it was a huge honor to win," said Bleiler, "JT was the best host ever and it was a great night all around." In addition to the actual ESPY evening festivities, Bleiler had an action-packed ESPY week in Los Angeles. For a promotional film for mutual skincare sponsor Mission Product, Gretchen and basketball MVP Steve Nash spent some quality time skimboarding on Venice Beach. All proceeds went to SOS Outreach which is a Colorado nonprofit organization focused on getting at risk youth participating in wintersports. Along with music from DJ's Sharp Shooter and Guy the guests were treated to appetizers and cocktails from Hapa Sushi and Vodka Fourteen. The event was a great success and raised awareness for SOS Outreach while generating funds to aid their programs. The contest challenged both aspiring and professional graphic designers to submit their own original designs for a snowboard. Although the caliber of all designs submitted was high only 3 winners could be chosen: First Place - Lucas Oxotegny Second Place - Leonardo De La Rocha Third Place - Melissa Kendrick Along with being an event sponsor K2 Snowboarding will be building a board for the 1st place winner using their design. I somehow ended up in the wrong RV following the Rocker Party, which seemed a semi common theme among others, and emerged to see a few left over Rockstars roaming the parking lot, fresh snow lining the ground, blue in the sky, and the last full day of Kamp K2 among us. <a href="http://s36.photobucket.com/albums/e29/smn360/?action=view&current=kk211.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e29/smn360/kk211.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> For some a little extra sleep was needed. The day was more than we could've asked for. There was great snow, good friends, and another party to look forward to for the evening and the whole event could be wrapped up in one word....AMAZING, and well fun. Seeing how Christmas is my favorite holiday I had to think about it for a minute and, well, I definitely had more fun at Kamp K2,. The best part is that I think anyone who was there would sincerely agree with any of those. What can we say? Only a big thank you. Thank you to all of you that were able to attend and make this event what it was. Thank you to all of our friends that helped us to set it up. Thank you to mother nature for the amazing weather. Baker but it had a cleansing effect on many that I knew and we all awoke feeling great despite trying to attack the overwhelming amount of PBR, vodka, and Vitamin water the night before.<a href="http://s36.photobucket.com/albums/e29/smn360/?action=view&current=kk23-1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e29/smn360/kk23-1.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> <a href="http://s36.photobucket.com/albums/e29/smn360/?action=view&current=kk27.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e29/smn360/kk27.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> The events for the day included a mini banked slalom, reminiscent of Bakers Annual LBS, but not quite as leg burning, and a Box Jam right in front of the White Salmon Lodge. K2 rider Aaron Robinson beat everyone in the Banked Slalom by 2 seconds flat while K2 rider Ivan Marcinko slaughtered every feature in the mini rail park to take the Box Jam. <a href="http://s36.photobucket.com/albums/e29/smn360/?action=view&current=kk22-1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e29/smn360/kk22-1.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> All in all it was an amaizing day. In it's 8th year and still drawing roughly 100 riders all willing to be tested on new jibs, jumps, and rail gardens set up specifically for the event, Last Call brings New England Spring riding in with a vengeance. The first feature sessioned was Loons giant hip. Luke Mathison, Tom Peplinski, Bode Merrill and everyone tossed out whatever they could in the one hour jam. Luke and Tom were busting huge 20 footers and were obvious crowd favorites, Colleen Quigley was hitting it hard even with her bruised heels from the Open, but Bode scored himself a nice new $900 Oakley watch for tossing in some more tech tricks and still large airs. After a BBQ lunch under the Red Bull tent everyone moved on to the 1/4 pipe / hip / giant Loon letters thingamajib. It got pretty interesting watching everyone figure out how to use the letters. Brandon Reis, Big Mike Gonsalves Chris Carr and Bode were all over it. Hand plants , one footers , presses, stalls, and some nasty looking close calls were huge spectator and camera pleasers. Tanner Pendelton was killing himself on a shopping cart perched up on the 1/4 with hand plants and one foot stalls. A few riders tried to figure out the creeper ledges over the hip but after another hour we had to slide on over to the rails and boxes. Sunny skies and a good assortment of 30' rails mostly over stairs rounded out the day. Austin Grainger, Stu Gingras, Brandon Reis and just about everyone else left standing probably would have hiked that set up for another couple hours the way it was going . All good things must come to an end though and Brandon basically shut it down with a back 3 to 50-50. The top three men and womens overall riders for the day scored cash and backpacks stuffed with clothing and Skullcandy. For the ladies: 3rd place Jordan Parks took $500 plus prizes, 2nd place Laura Rodowski got $800 and prizes, and Last Call veteran Colleen Quigley snagged $1200 and prizes. Mens 3rd place went to Shaun Murphy $500 and prizes, Chris Carr 2nd place $800 and prizes, and 1st place was handed to Brandon Reis $1200 A new K2 WWW, and a full pack of prizes. Oakley best trick watches also went out to Big Mike on the 1/4 jib, and Brandon Reis on the rails. Loons own park builder and jump, jib destroyer Tom P was sent off on a trip to Kamp K2 at Baker too. Everybody was invited to cruise the perfectly shaped Terrain Park on Germany’s highest Mountain, even though the shapers had to dig out the obstacles almost everyday. This was the snowfall we all were waiting the whole winter long. The three brands had coaches(teamriders) rollin’ a round to give usefull tips and show what tricks are up to date! Another highlight was the professional photographer, Alex Schneider, who shot about a million photos during the 2 weeks. Of course you were able to check out the new 0809 K2 Snowboards and try them in the park or on the slopes… In order to fullfill the high demand from girls for coaching, the first week was dedicated to girls.They received special welcome packages and female teamriders waited to teach some new moves. Unfortunately our European rider Julia Baumgartner blew out her knee one week before the camp. Ride and K2 Skis picked two riders for a one year sponsorship during the sponsor-me contest. The inaugural CoverGirl Snow Angels Invitational, offering over $20,000 in prize money, will take place in Snowmass, April 4-6, 2008. Gretchen Bleiler, Aspen/Snowmass Team Athlete and Olympian, dreamed up a weekend of photo shoots, competitions and activities for pro women snowboarders, and it’s coming to fruition during the last weekend of the eighth annual Bud Light Spring Jam. Fifteen of the world’s best snowboarders will attend including Bleiler, Hannah Teter, Kelly Clark, Tricia Byrnes, Elena Hight, Molly Aguirre, Clair Bidez, Soko Yamaoka, Kaitlyn Farrington, Shiho Nakashima, Ellery Hollingsworth, Paulina Ligocka, Lizzy Beerman, Meg Pugh and Manuela Pesko. “This event will be the perfect way to end the season and bring everyone together to ride, hang out and have some fun,” says Bleiler. “The weekend is turning out to be even bigger and better than I expected thanks to the support of the sponsors and Aspen/Snowmass. I can’t wait.” The CoverGirl Snow Angels Invitational is more than a simple superpipe competition. Girls Practice and Semi Finals started at 8 am before the pipe could even contemplate softening up. After a whirlwind tour across the world Gretchen showed up stomped her first run in semi's to qualify in first place. Ross Baker was the first rider to go in Men's semi finals and put together a sick first run which gave him a chance to compete in finals with the other top 15 riders of the day. By the time finals started the pipe had softened up a lot on the rider's left hand wall but stayed extremely firm on the right side creating a bit of trouble for many of the competitors. But in the end Gretchen's first run earned her 3rd place next to Torah Bright and Kelly Clark and Ross grabbed 6th place overall.
